Hey girls! It’s Joyce. Since winter is officially here, I wanted to give some recommendations on hand creme and lotions which I’ve personally found to be great at combating dry skin in this chilly season~ Only a few more days until winter break starts :)

In the past, I worked as a barista for quite some time. If you’ve ever worked as a barista, I’m sure you know what I mean when I say, “dry hands”. The constant re-washing of milk frothing pitchers, etc. really does a number on your skin after awhile. I’ve tried many different products out there and I’ve narrowed it down to a few which not only moisturize your skin throughout the day but won’t break the bank.

My Top Hand Creme/Lotion Picks for the Winter

Photographed are products I currently have left right now

1) Kiss Me Medicated Hand CremeThis hand cream is absolutely amazing!! My cousin gave me this little gem on my way back to NYC from Taiwan this summer and I can’t say enough good things about this product (謝謝表姐) :D.  This is a medicated hand creme made in Japan. It does have a slight medicinal smell but it’s not noticeable unless you attempt to stick your nose in the jar of hand creme.. The product is quickly absorbed and after a few times of using this product, you’ll notice a difference in the texture of your hands – Soft!  You can bring this product with you in your purse if you have extremely dry hands which easily makes  this an easy-to-reach for product. It does leave a slight greasy feel so I do recommend people to use it at night if you want to avoid this. After leaving on the product at night, you wake up with soft hands in the morning :)

2) Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion – This can easily be found in your local Duane Reade, Rite Aid, Walgreens, or pharmacy. Although it’s a bit more pricy compared to other generic drugstore brands, I feel it is justified because it actually moisturizes the skin throughout the day. Why buy something else that doesn’t work (albeit it being cheaper) when it doesn’t do what it claims to do, right? Honestly, I never tried the brand Aveeno for the longest time because I didn’t want to pay around $10ish dollars + tax on a drugstore lotion but I’m glad I decided to just purchase it one day because once you do, you realize those $6-7 dollar drugstore products aren’t cutting it in terms of moisturizing your skin!! I love this product because you can immediately feel the difference in the texture of your skin right after applying. It is not heavy nor greasy feeling and your hands become instantly soft after using this product~!

3) Gold Bond Skin Therapy Lotion, Ultimate Healing AloeThis was the lotion I used to moisturize my hands during my barista days. It really helped maintain moisture on my hands while working. The benefits of this product are that it is non-greasy, easily absorbed, and just plain worksI would recommend this product for people with very dry hands.

4) Burt’s Bees – Burt’s Bees products never fail in my opinion. They do what they promise and they also use natural quality ingredients. Two that I’ve tried which work wonders are: The Almond Milk Beeswax Hand Creme & The Shea Butter Hand Repair Cream. Both products are well worth the price and I’d definitely repurchase them. *In my opinion, hand cremes penetrate the skin deeper which makes moisturizing much more effective and long lasting*  For example, the feeling of lotion moisturizing your hands can disappear quickly but with hand cremes, they stay on much longer. Therefore, these hand cremes do leave a greasy feeling which I don’t mind at all because they’re supposed to! Most importantly, you only need about half a dime size(very little) of this product each time to moisturize your hands fully. You can instantly feel the difference in your hands!! I really love these two products!

*Bottom Line* – Which one is my favorite that I recommend? Well it depends.

  • If you absolutely need something that is water resistant and non-greasy >> I’d recommend Gold Bond Skin Therapy Lotion, Ultimate Healing Aloe.
  • If your hands already have fine lines and they’re severely dry (try a moisturizing hand creme) >> try out the Kiss Me Medicated Hand Creme. << Since it is made in Japan, it’s difficult to purchase so you can opt for alternatives like (Burt Bees products) The Almond Milk Beeswax Hand Creme or The Shea Butter Hand Repair Cream.
  • If you just need an everyday moisturizing lotion for the body (that lasts all day) and makes the skin super soft, go for the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion.

I hope these recommendations were helpful! =)

Since I live around LA, where the climate is very desert-like, I find that in the winter, my hands will get painfully dry with just normal handwashing after using the bathroom, in the shower, and around meals. I currently use Vaseline because it’s what my mom bought, and it feels greasy and doesn’t last that long. I’ll go try something you recommend when I get back to school.

I live in the Philippines and most of the time, it’s very warm, and I think that these hand creams/lotions will still be perfect to keep my skin moisturized. :) But I think Burts Bees are the only products available here.

I normally need hand creams in both summer and winter. Winter tends to see the air getting really dry here and it is the same in summer. My friend introduced me to using hand creams or a really good body lotion that lasts long. I use a strawberry lotion… it makes my hands smell so nice :D

Dove and Nivea are by far the best lotion brands for me and really do keep your skin healthy and full of moisture :)

Thank you for this post!! I have really dry skin (ashy snow skin) and I’m a germaphobe so I’m always washing my hands. But I’m really picky about how cremes/lotion feel on my hands so I usually avoid them, but I’ll have to check out that gold bond one you suggested, it sounds good!

I use an aveeno sample I stole from my sister but it’s running out. I think it’s not too bad, it doesn’t really have a greasy feeling ^^

I used to work as a barista at Panera bread and my hands were always dry. I too depended on the Gold Bond Aloe lotion. It felt AMAZING going on my skin and it was so reasonably priced and it worked. Hand creams are one of the things I’ll go the extra mile on because even now in the classroom I find myself washing my hands often. Great recommendations! I’ll probably try the Burts Bees as I already love their lip glosses and balms.

thank you for your lovely comment!

I hate winter, but love an excuse to stock up on lotions and hand creams. I too, am a Burts Bees lover and in my eyes, they can do no wrong :)

I also love Aquaphor, mixed in with a bit of my regular hand cream or body lotion; it gives it that extra moisture-sealing power.

Thanks for the review! Hand creams are essential for me in the wintertime cuz my hands get ridiculously dry and then it cracks :((( Right now I use the L’Occitane shea butter hand cream cuz I love the smell, but sometimes it’s too thick for me. I should look into the Gold Bond one or the Aveeno one!

I’ve always wanted to try Aveeno (for my scaly legs), but have been put off by the price. I’ve been using Dove for ages but I’m definitely going to take the plunge and try out Aveeno after reading your review. Thanks for sharing!

Oh man, I hate how dry my hands get in the winter season. I was having trouble with them just a couple weeks ago, so I started using lotion on my hands daily. I’m using one by Lubriderm, and it helped me a lot. Healed my hands, and they feel softer now! I’ll look into the other brands you posted too. I’ve been meaning to get a small one to carry in my purse :)

This is such a great post! I have terribly dry hands all year round, and they just get worse in the winter. I’ve tried the Burt’s Bees Almond one, and I really like it too, but I’m a bit iffy on the scent. I really want to try the banana version next :) I think I’ll pick up the Aveeno one too if I see it. Thanks for the great recommendations!

Thanks for the comment ♪(*^ω^)/ !! Ne, that Aveeno lotion doesn’t work for me LOLOL. I don’t know if it’s me or my super sensitive skin but it just makes my skin worse!! I always have to resort to prescription skin things.

Ah ne, I’ve been using Palty for the last 2-3 years? My hair literally looks like that image in my recent blog post! Hahha. I never bleached my hair because I have a broken scalp but that is what it looks like when I use the second most bright colour next to bleach! :DDD One time though, my friend fucked it up and decided to start at the bottom for some weird reason… So my hair will forever be a gradient =________=

Oh!! You had that problem too? A lot of my friends who use Palty had that orange problem DDD: ! Dang.

I’m one of those lazy people who cannot be bothered by lotion even though I seriously need it haha When my body gets dry or my hands get dry I would buy lotion targeted for them, but I only end up using them for a few days and give up cause I’m too lazy =__=””” (It’s too much work for me)

Right now I’m still “using” a hand cream I got when I was in Japan, Rosarium. It’s by Shiseido. It smells like roses :)

Thank you for the recommendations! I’ve heard good things about Aveeno :)

Great tips! I’ve tried Aveeno and it seemed to be really good, totally agree with you on that one ^^

My favourite moisturiser/ lotion is Crabtree and Evelyn Rosewater body and hand lotion – smells heavenly and it’s probably one of the moisturisers I’ve tried that actually works a dream. Best part is that it has a pump and I can use it as a handcream.
